My VL-BB has the dynamo safely tucked under the cab, so I don't need to add one.

You might want to double check the actual location of the dynamo on the "as delivered" early 4000s. If memory serves, it is located forward of the cab, on the Engineer's side, at the forward bottom edge of the firebox ashpan, near the rear driver.
