Modeling the KRL 304 Type FM Heavy Duty 12-axle flatcar in O scale (three rail)
This O scale model is a 12-axle flatcar which is based on the KRL 304. The KRL prototype is used for extra heavy duty loads. The model has a 11-1/4 inch platform length and an overall length of 17 inches. A special feature of the model is the use of articulated truck bolsters which allow the car to operate on small radius curves. Because each truck is allowed to shift side to side the car can operate more smoothly through turnouts and yards. The model also features a low center of gravity for additional stability.
Note: The KRL 304 is a 12-axle flatcar that was originally owned by Westinghouse (road number WECX 304). It uses 4 pair of Buckeye style 3-axle trucks. The overall car length is 70 feet 7 inches. The platform length is 45 feet. Capacity is 740,000 pounds. KRL railcars are owned by Kasgro Rail Corporation which is located in New Castle, Pennsylvania. Kasgro also manufactures and repairs railcars at this facility.
