MTH Boxcar w/Signalman - Continuous Operation

I was under the impression that the MTH operating boxcars with the signalman required the operating track section to actuate. However, I saw one at Catoctin Mountain Trains recently that was on regular track with 18 volts applied, and the operating cycle just kept repeating continuously. There were a lot of customers in the shop, and I had to leave before getting a chance to ask about it, and haven't been back since. Is this a switchable option (to use operating track section vs. run continuously) on these boxcars? I looked at the MTH online documentation for one of these cars and it made no mention of having the option to run continuously (which I would really like to do).
