You dont technically need the z-1000. If I remember correctly, the explorer comes with a transformer for small layouts

Gotcha. I already have a Z-1000 and the Lionel 990 remote. I just have some Premier Amtrak Surfliners and Metrolinks I would like to utilize their features more.
