I can not tell if the smoke is on or not without looking at the engine.

Look at the Engine Features Screen on page 52 of The DCS WiFi Companion 1st Edition. Just like the headlight and engine sound icons, the smoke icon gets dark (purple) when smoke is on and clear when smoke is off.
