I bought my WiFi module in August of 2018. Can I assume that its software is current and compatible with the new DCS 6.1?

While you cannot assume that it has firmware 1.1, it most likely has. Regardless, you need no special cables to update the WIU and you can use a web browser on just about any device. I recently did a WIU upgrade at York using my iPhone, while standing in the common are Ain the Orange Hall.

firmware 1.1 in the WIU - is that the remote? Will that also need to be updated?

If you use a DCS Remote as well as the DCS App, the remote must have the same DCS release as does the TIU, i.e., DCS 6.1.
