My 1:48 scale M1A1 does not stick out over the sides of my cars but I am using Weaver and Atlas cars. It's just a WEE bit narrower than the car is wide. It may be wider than Lionel or Williams.

I have that M60A2 in 1:35 scale and it is pretty awesome looking. Very futuristic looking.
