MTH New York Central 4-6-4 Dreyfuss Steam Engine with smoke problems

I have an MTH New York Central 4-6-4 Dreyfuss Steam Engine with Proto Sound 2. It is item # 20-3045-1. This engine, along with several other MTH engines, is being controlled by my MTH Digital Command System, and run very well. However, this particular engine does not respond to the Smoke on/off button on the remote controller. When you turn the smoke off, the smoke unit in the engine just keeps on working. A suggestion was made to me that the transistor that controls the smoke unit in the engine has gone bad. I am looking for opinions, replacement part numbers, diagrams and any suggestions that can be offered. Thanks very much.
