MTH PS1 difference in chips & top board

I remember the top board of PS1 AE-4500001 some have jumpers others don't. was this because of the differance between early chips (before 2000) & later ones (after 2000) ? Also the color early ones are brown later ones are black and all chips don't fit the angle is different. Does anyone know the answer to these questions? I know I wrote the answer down but can't fine it. Thanks
