Reply to "MTH Reading Crusader"

Besides replacing that 19 yr. old original white 8.4v ni-cad with either a 8.4v NiMh or J&W's BCR, I would inspect the speaker to see if there are particles around the cone and magnet that would indicate that the speaker has deteriorated over that same 19 yr. period.  IIRC MTH had a batch of speakers that tended to break down.  Your initial sounds might have shaken the brittle speaker components which would explain why later runs were distorted or muffled.  FWIW, you can decide how much you want to spend on the "battery" replacement (Nimh@$4.50each or BCR@$25) based on what you paid for the engine, how much or often you will run the engine and how long you plan to keep the engine.
