Neither of your recommendations has any more protection from damaging transient voltage spikes than the ZW & KW have.

Yes, for testing purposes both of these are fine... MTH prefers a pure sine wave power supply. If you are going to run modern electonics-laden trains for any time on a layout, EVERY transformer needs Transient Voltage Suppression in the form of bidirectional TVS diodes placed in parallel with the power supply.
