The electronics in your GG1 were made by a company in Beaverton, OR known as QSI. They made all the sound and reversing boards for MTH in the early days before Proto2 and Proto3. My advice is to remove the battery and purchase a J&W Electronics BCR to replace the battery. It is a capacitor that you charge on startup for sixty seconds and then you run the engine for as long as you wish without worrying about whether a battery is charged , not charged or simply not holding a charge. If you want to persist with the battery get a battery charger from MTH. If your battery is white in color throw it away and get a green MTH nickel metal hydride battery. Your engine was probably made in 1995-97. After 24 years it looks pretty good. The zinc pest is due to poor casting by the firm that made it, These impurities may never appear or they will. Lionel has had some beauties. I just spent $100.00 to replace my Lionel GG1 truck side frames. How many items have you used for 24 years that still work? MTH was eating Lionel's lunch at that time. All they had were the stubby postwar nonscale GG1's.
