I had these when they were first issued and they certainly are beauties! MTH took over the production of these Weaver models eventually but you are correct in that a second run did have flywheels. All I had to operate mine with was an original ZW and I had to be careful when engaging the throttle as well as stopping due to the sudden loss of power.
There are many newer transformer options out there now some with much lower starting voltages that the 6v-8v we had then.
