need help with transformer(s)

I have a Lionel Patriot ready to run set; it's a Lion Chief remote control that came with its own plug in power supply. That power supply output is 18 Volt DC 1750 mA 31.5 VA. I don't know what that means. Its a medium sized layout on Lionel Fasttrack with three remote switches. I bought an MTH Imperial locomotive 30-20361-1 to run on the same layout and need a way to power and control it. I purchased a used MTH Z-750 controller and transformer for that purpose. I think I "smoked it" already. The MTH transformer output is 24 Volt AC, 3.75 A, 90 VA. I gather I did something wrong. What do I need to run both the Lionel with its own remote and power / control the MTH on the same layout? I'm on a budget before you suggest the MTH DCS.
