Simplest method is to cut off the protruding spring. I just recently picked up some OdontoMed2011 Hard Wire Cutter Orthodontic Ortho Dental Instruments Tungsten Carbide (TC) Tips Orthodontic Plier Stainless Steel from Amazon for cutting springs, they work perfectly for stuff like this. Normal cutters are not up to the task of cutting hardened wire.
