Rocky raises an excellent point. Maybe the solution is a storefront 3-D printing shop, or a machine in the back of a hobby shop. Customers could bring in their printer-ready designs, or the shop could offer a list of rent-a-hackers who could do the design work, or scan a part to be reproduced (for a fee of course).
