Telephone wire works. The small gauge can be a PITA to work with. I had an issue with voltage drops on long runs (exceeding 20 ft) and now use larger gauge wire.
The voltage drop manifested itself on Ross tinplate switches where the Z1000 motors needed a full 18v to throw reliably.
