The reason that any of the control systems require twisted pair is to help in the isolation of the signals. Sooooo an answer to your question is NO do not use the third wire for anything other that a spare. I might even go so far as to suggest that maybe it should be grounded at both ends of your bus run just for safety sake as far as spurious signals is concerned. Any how thats my 2c worth for tonight!
