I’m not trying to be biased, but IMHO model power is the lowest quality detail you can buy in HO. If Lionel did indeed buy the tooling or molds or whatever, they are not very high quality. I believe they have some sort of deal because the Army train or military passenger train are awfully close to the model power version. If you want Ho scale that’s high quality, don’t buy the new Lionel’s.

From the Volume 2 catalog HO description for rolling stock, "rugged design for hands-on play," Lionel is definitely not pretending to match other high quality HO manufacturers. It appears to be more "toy" fashioned, let the smaller hands pick it up and play, not worrying about fragile and prototypical  models.
