Reply to "New MTH NW J Class Loco stalls or shuts down"

Yeap! There's a good chance that something isn't doing it's job. One of the wires inside maybe off? or not carrying the power?

Lay the loco on it's side on something soft, and check to see that the pick-up rollers are both connected. (should be two sets at least?)

If there a pick-up on the tender? You may have to add one to cross any dead spots on your layout. Most mid to large diesels will run over these without issue.

A steamer can rock or the pick-ups not touch and loose power.

Check that both sides of the loco's wheels and the tender are connected (with the suggested meter).

Can you post a picture of the bottom of the loco and tender?
