That's what I posted earlier as 'Box scale' Back in the day models were scaled to fit a company standard box.....say 12 inches long by 4 inches wide. The kit company didn't care about a constant scale....just fit the box!!
Ah-ha! That makes sense. It's still going on today. Hot wheels or johnny lightning or one of the other manufacturers who make mostly 1/64 scale, made a Sherman tank recently. It's listed as 1/64, but measures out to about 1/83, but it's the same length as a 1/64 automobile.
Boy was I disappointed.
