Proto scale is MTHs term for locomotives that can be ran on both 2 rail and 3 rail . I don’t know if there’s other definitions or not...

FWIW my 2 rail dip didn’t last long- after further contemplation I’m (re)joining the ranks of the 3 railers after a 25 year ish break.
