Just so I understand this right, the PS 2 BCR can replace the battery in a 5 volt early PS 2 systems even though it is a 3 volt BCR.

That's incorrect. It cannot. As GGG stated:

The PS-2 3V BCR is smaller and designed to replace the 2.4V battery. G
