Yes, this should make NO difference. And that is the experiment. Would line isolation affect the problem? The other thing bothering me here is the "capacitive imbalance". Won't such imbalance always exist since there are 2 outer rails and only one center rail?

Yeah I think there's always capacitive imbalance practically speaking.... like maybe 1nF and 1.1nF or something. It's only going to be an issue if the difference leads to a differential voltage up in the 1-2V range, which would have to be a major mismatch.
