Reply to "O Gauge Tips-n-Tricks"

A good tip is have a way to reverse trains on the layout. Reversing trains makes things more interesting and active to keep interest up.

This can be done with reversing loop, as single loop or with two reversing loops in a oval and figure 8 or double dog bone.  These track plans allow reversing in both directions.  An other way is to install a Wye in the layout.  A Wye will reverse a train but may require running the train in reverse to complete.  I recently added a Wye to my 44 year old layout on the outside layout tracks even thought it had a double dog bone and my inside loop had an oval and figure 8 showing I like reversing trains.

Reversing a train is possible with a straight track with a two switch by pass track.  This will require the engines be diesels with two cabs or a F3AA set of engines that can operate in both directions.  Also several uncoupling track sections or remote operated couplings are required.  The engineer stops the train on the main line between the two by pass switches.  He then uncouples the engine from the train, moves it forward past the switch on the by pass track, and the engine uses the by pass track to go to the rear of the train using the other by pass switch.  This system will require special moves if one wants the caboose to be moved to the rear of the train or has passenger parlor car on the end with out a coupling.
