MTH has two versions of the P5A boxcab. One is rated for O54. The other is O72.
Mine is a turd. It requires perfect trackwork. Two motors on a solid frame with one using DCS and the other not makes tracking and pulling issues.

Try removing the springs from the four wheel trucks. If that fails, move the tach reader to the motor that drives the two axles.
