Sealing the wood and foriegn bugs would be my guess.

 Thanks. I'm happy with the way the wood came out with those large match sticks.

Using separate pieces, maybe it's that they would have to make sure it was all glued together securely enough. Then worry about it staying together during shipping and rough handling.  Sealing and bugs also. I'm sure there laws about importing organic things like wood, too. Painting the pieces to look like quarter split logs would add another issue. Mine are square with one side painted but you really don't see that unless you look close. I didn't want to try to split them.
