Piece of something between pins in MTH wireless drawbar

Hello. I'd rather ask a stupid question than do something stupid...well, the ship has sailed on the latter. Anyway, took out of the box a never-run MTH PS3 scale-wheel N&W J. Well, it may have been run very briefly just after I bought it a few years ago. Oiled it in spots. A dab of grease in those four places.

There's a piece of something between two of the pins in the wireless drawbar. That doesn't belong there, right? I should remove it?

Having issues with, I assume, the drawbar, especially when loco going backward. Loco just stops.

ADD: Well, took it (the piece of debris) out of the drawbar. Really made no difference - at first. Then it seemed to be running better. Then another stop. Make sure drawbar connection is snug. Then an odd one - no lights, no chuff (no sounds at all) - but engine still running backward. Sometimes when it stops, the chuffs stop a second or two before the loco stops. Sometimes it's concurrent. But sounds other than chuff stay on. Running straight DC, FYI. Have WTIU on order.  It's 22-3573-2.
