Pines Trees

I am trying to make pine trees using the bottle brush method. The rope I purchased from the hardware store does not seen to spin correctly giving me decent tree branches. In addition it is very hard to separate the strains decently. Is there a special kind of rope (like a hemp) or diameter that is recommended?
