Placement of insulated tracks for gateman and crossing gates on new layout

Wondering how others set these up assuming trains travel in both directions (clockwise sometimes, counter-clockwise sometimes) and also when there are two mainlines running parallel around the layout.

Can the gateman be connected to an insulated track on each mainline? What happens a train on each mainline is going across the insulated track at the same time? Is that like crossing the streams on Ghostbusters?

What type of push-button switch would you recommend for manual operation of the gateman? I've read some recommend keeping trackside accessories manual to provide interaction for kids.  No grandchildren yet, but new layout is being built assuming grandchildren in next 3-5 years.

Anyone using push buttons for crossing gates?

Similar question on crossing gates. On my last layout, they only came down and went up with a train on one mainline, but they weren't activated by the other mainline. Not a very safe operation for my layout's cars.
