Reply to "Building New Standard Gauge/O Gauge Layout - Track Choices etc."

I have neglected posting updates, but I haven't neglected to work on the layout!  The O gauge loop is complete and I added two standard gauge storage tracks under parts of the O gauge track.  The storage tracks can also be used as an alternate part of the loop.  I added three more modified american flyer switches controlled by servos.  I tried a Lionel standard gauge switch, but the some of trains kept derailing (mostly the Lionel trains).   The O gauge loop has eight lionel 1121 switches.  Operating the 1121 switches created a LOT more electrical noise than the LGB switches and made the servos go crazy.  I solved that problem by adding a choke on the negative wire feeding the 1121 switch pushbuttons.  The silver metal supports for the O gauge track were made from a wine/baker's rack we didn't need.  I cut it up and welded it together - couldn't believe how much of it I used up.  The idea was to support the track without obscuring the standard gauge track below.  I gave up on trying to make a standard gauge storage track below the table.  I made storage drawers instead - enough to hold all the standard gauge trains.

I hooked up the O gauge track to a TIU variable channel.  When that channel failed due to a few derailments, I used the other variable channel.  I ran the Lionel 1681 engine and train for about 30 scale miles (this was my Dad's first electric train).  Not too long after that, that channel failed, but still works as a fixed channel.  New FETs are on order.  The O gauge loop is about one scale mile, long enough to run two or three trains at once.   The standard gauge loops can also accommodate more than one train each, so eight trains can be run a once.   More detailed pictures later.
