@MartyE, while your concern may be well founded, the complete closing seems to point contrary to your concern (if you believe them to be able to stick to their word)
Sites created after the release of the new digest system will only be able to use the new model. In other words, the new notification model is the future, but we are allowing existing sites to keep using the old model as long as they want.
