Thank you so much for the follow-up, and making a great little controller from readily available components......you rock!!!

Back to my original post, in the end I found the problem was not so much with the Z4000 not getting the voltage low enough, but that the "sine wave" coming from the Z4000 at low voltage wasn't correct to trigger some of the very early PS1 QSI boards.  Apparently it is all to do with the type of "sine wave" the Z4000's produce, being different to the "sine wave" produced by the Z1000's. This technology is well above my pay grade!!

Anyway, I have learned to live with it, and keep both the Z1000 and Z4000 on the control deck, and switch between them, depending on which PS1 loco I want to run.
