I am reminded of the old phrase, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch.”  Apple calls it “High Efficiency” whereas I call it what it is - highly compressed image files that sacrifice image quality to keep file sizes small. This isn’t something new. This is a trade-off that has been part of the process of working in digital imagery ever since digital imagery came on the scene. With regard to Apple’s hyperbole about HEIC, it’s nothing more than attempting to put lipstick on a pig.

Couldn't have said it better myself, I think you have it! Lipstick on a pig is exactly what it is!

Personally, I'm moving to PNG graphics as they're lossless.  If I happen to decide to edit them a couple of times, I'm not turning my graphics into mush.
