I thought you actually had to bid to find out if your bid was the best. I just went and bid $100 on it, and it told me I was outbid. However, the price on it now is $100, my bid amount. AFAIK, there should be no way to determine the maximum bid pending without actually doing the bidding, that's always been my experience. That's also a hallmark of the eBay bidding system.
