Prewar Lionel 46 crossing gate?

I have a Prewar Lionel 46 crossing gate I want to remove the solenoid from the unit (the red base part) the rivets came out easy enough but the plunger /coil will not pull out ...Do I have to remove the rivet from the gate before it will drop out ... OR..? The coil will move @ 1/4 inch then feels stuck.. thanks for the info DAniel
