I assume the smoke issue on that one board is even with the smoke unit disconnected. Since we know PS2 boards PWM the smoke fan and heating elements, it's logical to assume a buffer is involved for the smoke too...so the relay and smoke issue could be related through the presumably damaged buffer chip.
