PS1 AC-6 Smoke Unit Motor

I'm trying to replace a smoke fan motor in a PS1 AC-6. I ordered some DC 3V-5V 3.7V 4.2V 31000RPM N20 motors because they seemed the correct dimensions and voltage. I wired one into the board and.... nothing. I tried a stock fan motor unit out of another engine, a PS2 GS-4, and it worked fine. But this new motor I bought won't move at all. It works fine when 3v DC is applied from a battery pack. What am I doing wrong here? Are PS1 smoke motors some special unit?
