PSC class lights

Has anyone had much luck in installing class lights from PSC? I ordered some later style for a PRR engine and the part that gets illuminated is solid. Is it easy to hollow out? A 2 railer said that he uses 0603 warm white LED's. Could I take those 0603s and splice them to the green LED's that are there now? I'm wondering if that is an easy substitute given the fact that I know nothing about electronics.
