I just came back from a trip on the Amtrak California Zephyr, my 29th cross-country trip on the three western trains to California, squeezed in a "Roomette." Of the four Europeans I met in the dining car, all noted the poor quality equipment and trackage, ironic given the incredible scenery. Finances will determine whether it is so; however, I hope I can go again, my favorite being the Empire Builder.
