Well if you keep at a problem long enough, then just maybe it can be solved. I took some of the comments and then sat down and did an engineering approach- I love to build machinery, and tried to figure out how I would do the clips. Straighten the top out so it is flat again with a small hammer, gently, just as was advised. Then straighten the curved clip ends out to a 90 degrees with the top flat bar. Push into place, then the ends of the 2 clips stick out about 3/32, take a pair of pliers and pinch the clips into the closed position. Taking them off is the reverse, just spread the clip ends at the bottom and then pull the whole clip out.
