Re: smoke unit problems

My smoke unit is not working for the Lionel 6-38094 Milwaukee Road Hiawatha 4-4-2 Steam Locomotive (2006 Classic Trains Vol. 1 Catalog) and my repair guy, after testing for the reasons why, indicated that I needed part #691-SSMU-FS1.  When looking at the list of parts for that engine, part #691-SSMU-FS1 (SMOKE UNIT PCB / SMART SMOKE *) is listed as sequence #49 in the picture depicting the exploded view of all of the parts for the locomotive; it is priced at $22 and is shown as unavailable.  Going further down the list, the very last part listed--the actual part is not shown in the picture depicting the exploded view of all of the parts for the locomotive and no sequence number of 86 is given, but the part would be sequence #86--is part #630-8095-200 (FAN DRIVEN SMOKE UNIT / SMART SMOKE / 6 OHM / RECT); it is priced at $42 and is shown as in stock.  From what I can see of both parts, part#691-SSMU-FS1 is just the electronic board and part #630-8095-200 looks to be the entire smoke unit assembly...an educated guess.  Is part #630-8095-200 (in stock) the part that replaced or could be used in lieu of part #691-SSMU-FS1 (unavailable)?

I was also wondering, does an asterisk after the description of a part indicate that a different or newer part replaced that part?

Smoke units have been a source of frustration recently--specifically, the Lionel Mickey Celebration LionChief Set engine and the MTH Coors Light Silver Bullet Set engine--and I would like to thank all of the OGR Forum members who have shared their advice/suggestions, especially the links to several YouTube videos.
