Yep, a few months ago I tried soldering and taping the ends of 18 gauge wire together under the track, because I hated trying to use the butt crimps to hook them together.
Next day, my wife asked, "Where did you get all of those small burns on your left wrist?"
I think the wire nuts may be the best bet.
