SP did use its Bay Area GP9/E's, SD9's, GP40P-2's and SDP45's in freight service on the weekends. But these were more freight units with passenger equipment. NJT engines could run on a freight, but they were built as commute passenger from the whees up. I say the arw deadheading to or from repair work.
