A further study of "DRGW Color Pictorial" (an excellent book, BTW) revealed L131 #3607 on 08-14-54 in Tennessee Pass helper service at Minturn, with red hubs on the 3rd drive wheels, only. So, red hubs were employed at least in the late '30's/early '40's up to about the end of std gauge Rio Grande steam (1956). 3607's other hubs were white.
