That explanation works for PS/1, and was a common issue with early PS/1 boards from 2095 and earlier. PS/2 doesn't have the scrambled board issue from bad batteries. The issue with PS/2 is thought to be a possible short across the battery damages the charging circuit, but that may not be the whole story.
