What Harry suggests might be a better solution than mine for the locomotive I used for my demonstration. That was a 1664 that has widely spaced drivers. It would not work with a 1666.

On some motors, I've used the pull back the spring method using tweezers. It was one of the F-3 or NW-2 motors that caused me to use the cardstock method.
