roadbed American flyer traditional track

I have quite a large layout laid out - not nailed down. I'm not a huge fan of rubber roadbed - cost of 150+ feet and what you you do about 1/2 sizes and custom sizes (I sometimes need to add short pieces.) Cork roadbed, I suppose you have to cut cork to fit under the switches, and if it's on cork you don't get that nice filled in look between the ties. What works good? Thanks
