Roofs and Covers - I should know this but don't

I appreciate any and all guidance. For Modern MTH 260E's and 263T tenders, do the cab roofs and coal pile covers just slide off? If so, are there any tricks to avoid scratching the paint? Also for Prewar Ives O 135 series passenger cars, how do I get the roofs off?
