John, mine is 1/2" also. I cut it with a knife like the old box-cutter or utility knife. Tom Tee suggested a bent handle knife like the old utility knife that flooring/carpet layers use. Others here have suggested a knife blade that fits in a saber saw. No mess at all. Just be careful!!
